So what's our story and why are we making wine?

Our Story

Well, I met Emma in London while on a work training course, and as soon as I met her, I made every effort to impress and convince her I was worthy of her time.

Before I met Emma, I worked for a consulting firm and essentially made the Bay area a second home.  I made countless trips up to Napa and was fortunate to have a small group of great winemakers and families take me under their wing and teach me so much about the world of wine.  I caught the bug, and my passion for wine has grown from there.

Fast forward a few years, and I explained to Emma that someday I would like to be involved more in the wine industry.  Emma’s sharp insight asked why anyone would look to me as someone with wine expertise, So, I embarked on becoming a sommelier, and after a bit of hard studying, I succeeded in achieving that status and even have the certificate and pins to prove it.  Now, a lot of people ask what is a healthcare executive doing learning to be a sommelier?  I suppose, I’m a healthcare executive so that one day I can be a wine person.

My interest in wine started when I learned all about the different wine regions in Europe as part of my A level exams in French and Spanish.

When I met Jeff, we ended up going on lots of trips to different regions around the world, and it was during one of those trips to Napa that I had found a new appreciation for wine made well.  I had an amazing cabernet sauvignon, and I was hooked.

In the meantime, my career led me to build expertise that help businesses transform and achieve operational excellence.  With 6040 Wines, I get to put this skill set to the test as we cobble together the infrastructure and administration necessary to operate a boutique wine label.

Our Wine

We dabbled in winemaking over the past number of years making craft barrels here and there, and when we had the opportunity to take a short sabbatical from the healthcare world, we decided to launch our own wine label, 6040 Wines.  We make very small quantities of wine and only sell direct to consumers via networking and personal relationships.

And how do we do all this?  Well, we source all of our fruit from California.  We’ve been in the dirt harvesting bunches of grapes, and we can tell you that we are not farmers.  We’ll let those talented people do that good work.  From there, we contract with a custom crush facility to create our wines.  We work closely with their in-house winemakers to develop the style and expression of fruit we would like to see.  Then from there, we take charge of the blending stage and will meticulously weigh numerous permutations to finally arrive at a final wine we like.  After that, it’s time for bottling and labeling and eventually able to be purchased online via our website.

As for our style of wine, we like to think about the tasting experience in three stages: the first 10 seconds, the next 30 seconds and then the next 2 minutes.  The first ten seconds is where we usually notice the fruit forwardness of the wine.  The next 30 seconds is where we get to observe the structure of the wine, so when the initial fruit taste fades and we get into more of the herbal, spices, floral, earthy or stone notes.  And then finally, the ending phase where either the acidity or the nutty/vanilla notes from barrels begin to come through and leave a lasting memory.  As we develop the final blends, what we look for is balance through the three stages as well as seamless transitions.  We work hard to develop a full balanced expression of the grapes that glides the individual on the journey throughout the tasting experience.

And why the name 6040? 6040  is the address of the forever home we built in Phoenix, Arizona. Great wines not only have the best grapes but they also come from the heart. And for us our heart is our family. 6040 Wines are an expression of that source of inspiration and devotion,

We hope you enjoy the end result of our efforts here – we really do this out of our love and passion for creating high quality boutique wines.  Cheers!
